Description | | | Buckden is a town class “Big Woolwich motorboat” built of riveted steel by Harland and Wolff at their North Woolwich yard for the Grand Union Canal Carrying Company in 1936. 71’6” long and 7’ 0” wide. She is presented in cargo carrying condition, with full running gear and is complete with her original National DM2 diesel engine installation. Unusually for these vessels she has been restored to ‘as built’ form and detail, except for the current owners’ livery. The restoration includes a framed and boarded wooden cabin with riveted engine room, high pigeon box, removeable liner funnel, electric klaxon, wooden stern deck (in teak) with closed weeps, etc. Her cabin has full traditional fittings, including a solid fuel range. There are some C21 comforts which include electric start, a very slightly enlarged cross-bed, a door through the bulkhead between the cabin and engine room and a gas installation for ‘summer use’. Buckden has been extremely well maintained by her two ownerships in the last fifty years. The current owners have had her for 28 years. During this time she has undergone comprehensive platework repairs mainly by Brinklow Boat Services, Ian Kemp and Tim Leach, and comprehensive engine and gearbox works by Tim Leach and Tim Wood. The new wooden cabin was built to an exceptionally high standard at Brinklow by Rex Wain and Adrian Polglase with every piece of timber being epoxy primed on all faces before fixing with bronze nails in a king’s ransom of Sikaflex, with the new engine room by Steve Priest, all carefully researched for original Harland and Wolff detail. Buckden had a hull condition survey carried out by Mike Carter of Marine Surveys Limited in November 2022. All recommendations were attended to at this time. | | Specifications | | Vessel name: | Buckden | Vessel condition: | Used | Builder: | Harland and Wolff | Year constructed: | 1936 | No. of engines: | 1 | Engine model: | National DM2 | Fuel type: | Diesel | Drive type: | Shaft drive |
